NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A fast start from Manchester University spotlighted a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference – Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association battle Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Spartans (1-5) gave their home crowd inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena plenty of cheer about in the opening six-plus minutes. Using the three-point shooting accuracy of freshman guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) among others, MU led No. 11-ranked D3Hoops.com Calvin College of Michigan 18-11. The home team kept the lead until just inside of nine minutes remained in the half, as the Knights (4-0) took off on a 21-7 run of their own to lead 39-28 at halftime.
Manchester University remained within arms' length of the Knights through most of the second half, trailing by as little as 12 (54-42) with just under nine minutes left. Calvin pieced together a 19-7 stretch to expand the advantage to 24 en route to their 78-50 victory.
Brouwer led the Spartans with 14 points which included a strong 50 percent effort from outside the arc (four-for-eight). Sophomore forward Jarod Schrock (Logansport, Ind.) added 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) was just outside of double digits, scoring eight points due to two-of-four shooting from outside the arc.
MU opens the 2013-14 HCAC slate Wednesday, Dec. 4, with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena against Defiance College.
NOTES: MU reached double figures in made three-point baskets for the second time this season, hitting on 11-of-24 attempts. They also reached the mark at Kalmazoo College Nov. 21, converting on 14-of-29 attempts … Brouwer equaled his single-game season high in regards to made three-pointers. He also drilled four at Kalamazoo.
