FORT WAYNE, IND. – Prefacing a pivotal week of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, Manchester University played a nip-and-tuck non-conference match-up at Indiana Tech's Warrior Baseball Field Wednesday, April 25.
The Spartans, dipping to 16-17, rallied from an early 5-1 deficit against the highly-touted National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' foe, plating three runs in the fifth to make it 5-4. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) and junior outfielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) clouted run-scoring singles in the frame. Indiana Tech, moving to 33-17, managed to thwart any further comeback by its guests with a single run answer in their half of the fifth and two scores in the eighth to decide an 8-4 final.
Gallatin's three-hit, two-RBI effort led the offense. Freshman starting pitcher Jacob Van Pelt (Parker City, Ind.) went four and third on the bump surrendering only three earned runs. Senior Deric Haynes (Goshen, Ind.) finished the evening with a pair of strikeouts over the final three and two-thirds.
Coach Rick Espeset's squad, standing fifth on the loop list but just a game out of third, travels to Defiance College's Craig A. Rutter Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Thursday, April 26.
