Venue changes for Transylvania series

Due to a forecast for inclement weather in the Lexington, Ky., area this weekend, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series between Manchester University and Transylvania University, originally slated for TU's William A. Marquard Field, has been moved to MU's Gratz Field.

Series details: First pitch is 12 p.m. Saturday, April 22, for a 12 p.m. doubleheader and 12 p.m. Sunday, April 23, for a single contest … Live statistics can be followed via a link at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … The Spartans (13-15 overall, 10-6 HCAC) are tied with preseason favorite Earlham for second, trailing defending champion Rose-Hulman by only two games for first. Transylvania (12-17 overall, 7-9 HCAC) is tied for sixth with Anderson University and Defiance College … Manchester University has won nine of the last 14 in the series, but the two sides split a year ago, as the Pioneers knocked the Black and Gold out of the league tournament as one of their two victories.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Rick Espeset's team has won six of its last eight to skyrocket up the conference standings. They've averaged 15 runs a game in their last two victories – 14-11 over Hanover College April 15 and 16-5 over Anderson University April 18 … A healthy dose of junior starting pitcher Stephen Pinarski (Goshen, Ind.) coupled with another high-flying offensive attack led to a fourth successive loop win Tuesday. Pinarski, evening his record at 1-1, stifled the league rival Ravens to the tune of three runs on six hits with five strikeouts peppered in over six and two-thirds innings. While he was showing off his wares on the mound at Gratz Field, his teammates were giving the right-hander plenty of leeway. Five Black and Gold players tallied multiple-hit outings. Sophomore right fielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) made the most of an opportunity at leadoff with two hits, one of which was a double, three RBI and four runs scored; junior left fielder Eric Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) slugged three hits, including his fourth home run of the season, while driving in three and scoring twice; freshman second baseman Nick Rush (Terre Haute, Ind.) continued to impress with a three-for-three effort at the plate which featured a double, two runs scored and two RBI; fellow first-year team member Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) resumed his strong maiden collegiate campaign with a pair of hits and a run scored; and third baseman Brandin Frazier (Wabash, Ind.) added to the freshman highlight reel with two hits and two runs scored … Despite not registering a safety against AU, senior outfielder Chad Schultz (Fair Oaks, Ind.) still managed to extend his lengthy on-base string, sending it 26 straight games due to reaching on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second. Included in that run are eight home runs which lead the team and HCAC while ranking in the top 20 of NCAA Division III. He's also third-highest in the loop in doubles (13) and fourth in slugging percentage (.661). Senior pitcher Cory Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is also among the conference's top five with his listings being in wins (five – T-1st) and saves (three – T-2nd).

Busy Week Begins: The season series finale against HCAC foe Defiance College, scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, begins a run of five games in six days.
