FRANKLIN, IND. – Senior pitcher Dylan Padgett (Kirklin, Ind.) compiled a game one gem Saturday, April 12, leading Manchester University to a split with Franklin College.
Padgett, going to 3-0 against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opposition, twirled a three-hit, six-strikeout effort on the mound. He received plenty of support from the offense, as the Spartans (17-10 overall, 11-3 HCAC) registered 12 hits in the 6-2 win.
The middle part of MU's order played the biggest role. Senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.), freshman first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) and junior outfielder Justin Miller (Yorktown, Ind.) combined for seven hits, three runs scored and four RBIs.
Franklin (16-12, 7-7 HCAC) managed to salvage the series' final game in the nightcap. The hosts rallied from a 3-0 deficit after one inning with a seven-run attack over the fourth and fifth innings en route to a 10-7 victory. The Black and Gold, trailing 10-3 into the ninth, pushed across four tallies in their last at=bat and brought the potential tying run to the plate before FC closed the game out.
Junior shortstop Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) and sophomore third baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) led the offense. They each picked up three hits including a double for Kimm and a round-tripper for Knepper.
Manchester University continues conference action Tuesday, April 15. Anderson University visits Gratz Field for a 4:15 p.m. first pitch.
NOTES: The Spartans maintained a two-game lead in the win column over second-place Rose-Hulman on the HCAC standings … Junior outfielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) increased his team season-high-tying on-base streak to 15 straight games.
