MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Manchester University's offense got the 2014 season off to an impressive start Saturday, March 1.
The D3Baseball.com No. 7-ranked Spartans put up 21 hits in a season-opening twinbill against Manhattanville College of New York. However, the Valiants put together a pair of late-inning comebacks to take a sweep by 7-6 and 8-7 scores.
In the opener, the trio of senior designated hitter Dan Maringer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and outfielder Ryne Lehrman (Hoagland, Ind.) and junior outfielder Justin Miller (Yorktown, Ind.) led the attack. Lehrman and Maringer each tallied two RBIs, while Miller finished with two hits. Game two saw Maringer add two hits, while junior outfielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) produced three hits, a run scored and an RBI, sophomore second baseman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs and a pair of newcomers, freshman designated hitter Blake Fry (Middlebury, Ind.) and sophomore outfielder Chad Gindelberger (South Bend, Ind.) each tallied two hits.
MU's pitching staff's first outing of 2014 was spotlighted by senior Temujin Sery (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Sery struck out nine Manhattanville batters in the nightcap, but MC touched him for six runs, including a five-run fifth inning outburst after falling behind 6-0 after four frames.
The Black and Gold continued their southern trek with games against the College of Staten Island of New York and Wilkes University of Pennsylvania Sunday, March 2.
