Spartans place five on HCAC weekly honors

Five fall sports student-athletes represented Manchester University on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly honors for Oct. 9-15.

Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) and senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) swept the men's soccer awards for their role in a landmark 1-0 win over then United Soccer Coaches Association No. 20-ranked Transylvania University Oct. 14. Gonzalez, as part of a three-point week, netted the winning score in the 103rd minute, and Forman, taking his second Defensive Player of the Week accolade, fired a clean sheet at the Pioneers' offense to run a current string of scoreless minutes into the 200s.

The cross-country honors were also a sweep for senior men's runner Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore women's runner Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.). Harris, earning his second recognition of the season, was the top league finisher at Oberlin College's Inter-Regional Rumble Oct. 14. He placed eighth and posted a time of 25:37 which is among the program's top 15 8K times. Wappes, garnering her third straight notice, helped Manchester place 15th out of 29 teams at the Oberlin. She finished eighth out of 240 runners with a 6K time of 22:36.

Senior women's tennis player Erin Cordill (Zionsville, Ind.) rounded out the Spartans' honors. Picking up her second accolade of the year, she completed a 7-0 run through HCAC number one singles play with straight-set victories over Rose-Hulman's Anna Thompson 6-1, 6-3 and Transylvania's Mary Grace Amato 6-3, 6-2. In the win over Amato, it helped ensure a 5-4 dual victory over the Pioneers. Cordill joined fellow senior Mariam Ali in a 9-8 win over Rose-Hulman's Thompson/Naomi Bhagat and 8-3 win over Amato and Lillian Williams of Transylvania, as they improved to 6-1 against the HCAC.
